organic mattress

why choose a natural or organic mattress?

For one thing, you will likely get a better nights’ sleep.

People tend to sleep more soundly and comfortably due to the natural fibers in organic mattresses. Why?

organic mattressNatural fibers used in organic mattresses allow the body to breathe and regulate body temperature. Wool, for instance, helps keep you cool when it is warm and warm when it is cold. When you sweat, the body’s natural method for cooling you down, materials used in conventional mattresses trap the moisture making you feel damp and sticky. Wool on the other hand absorbs the moisture, allowing the body to cool down. Wool and cotton are the most common materials used in organic mattresses.

Organic mattresses also help promote a healthy environment. Organic farming methods (for producing cotton, wool and natural rubber) support environmentally friendly methods.

And not to scare you, but conventional mattresses are made with synthetic materials, some of which are known carcinogens (cancer-causers), and some that contribute to other serious health problems. Polyurethane foam, the most commonly used filler in non-organic mattresses, is a proven carcinogen.

Other unsafe chemicals used in the manufacturing of mattresses include PBDEs. PBDEs are used as a flame retardant in mattresses. PBDEs do not bind to the material and particles make their way into household dust, which we eventually take in while simply breathing the air in our homes. PBDEs have been found in breast milk and in studies done on mammals. These studies show that PBDEs can have serious negative affects on thyroid hormones and the brains of unborn fetuses.

So buy sleeping on an organic mattress you can breathe easier and sleep better knowing that you are making the smartest choice for yourself and the environment.
