organic
makeupThe
use of makeup is certainly a personal preference. It is a way of
expressing ones self. Contrary to the outdated image of the “granola
girl,” many women who live a natural lifestyle enjoy using
make-up. There is nothing unnatural about using one’s own
body as
a palette for self expression.
Did
you know that our skin absorbs somewhere in the ballpark of 60% of the
products we use on it, and that the elements of those products are
eventually deposited into our bloodstream?
That
said, it is easy to understand why a woman would choose organic makeup
over conventional cosmetics.
There
are products used in conventional cosmetics that are known carcinogens.
In the small amounts used in an individual tube of lipstick or
concealer, they are not likely to be harmful. But the long-term
build-up of different chemicals over time certainly could be. This is
known as the “chemical cocktail effect.”
| The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) says
on its website
that “Cosmetic products
and ingredients are not subject to FDA
premarket approval authority, with the exception of color additives.”
This leaves the cosmetics companies wide open to use
products that are
known to be harmful. And there are many used … |
Just
one example is mercury. The FDA states pm Mercury in cosmetics:
"Mercury
compounds are readily absorbed through the skin on topical application
and tend to accumulate in the body. They may cause allergic reactions,
skin irritation, or neurotoxic manifestations.”
Yet
if
you read your labels, you will often find mercury or a derivative right
there on the ingredients list, particularly in cosmetics for the eyes.
It
becomes even more clear why it
is important to choose natural and organic cosmetics.
We
have selected some of our favorite organic make-up products to share
with you.
