The switch to organic lotion from mineral oil-based products is one of the best things you can do for your skin and for your body as a whole.

The harmful effects of mineral oil, which is used in practically every synthetic lotion on the market, are many.

Mineral oil, also known as petrolatum or petroleum jelly, is mined the same way petroleum is and from the same place. In fact, the raw material for petroleum jelly was discovered in 1859 in Titusville, Pennsylvania where it was stuck to some of the first oil rigs in the U.S. The workers disliked the paraffin like material because it caused the rigs to seize up, but they noticed it sealed the skin which seemed to promte healing. Mineral oil, therefore, has a similar make-up to the gas that we put in our cars. It should come as no surprise, then, that mineral oil cannot be easily absorbed by your skin. Instead, it creates a film on top preventing the skin from being able to breathe, causing it to dry out. It also dissolves the skin's natural oils, further disturbing the skin's natural balance.
