baby sleep aids & tipsFor many new
parents, getting
your baby to fall asleep and stay asleep can be one of the biggest
challenges of those first few weeks and months. Adjusting to having a
new baby around is exhausting, and the only real break is when your
baby is napping. We will recommend a
few
tips to help your little one get some zzz’s, and also point you to
several safe and natural baby sleep aids that may help.
Tips
for putting baby down- Be aware of your
attitude when trying to put your baby down. You can’t force your baby
into a restful state, and infants feed off of your energy. Be in a
relaxed state when you’re ready to put your baby down. Turn overhead
lights off and light a natural candle lightly scented with lavender
essential oil, a proven sleep inducer.
- Try
to get your baby into a sleep routine. This can be hard in the
beginning, and you never want to keep your baby awake when her
tiredness sets in. But if you can start introducing routines early, the
more likely they are to stick later. If your baby seems to fall asleep
after nursing, make a habit of putting baby in the same resting place
after every nursing session. Put on the same soothing,
repetitive music. Light the same candle each time. Of the
five senses, scent is most strongly associated with memory. So using a
scented candle to implement a routine can be very successful. Rocking
babies to sleep is also very common, as is giving him a warm bathe to
relax.
- Leave a little bit of
mom
behind. Try putting a breast pad in the crib with the baby, or tape
record your voice singing a familiar tune, playing it back
repetitively. There are even devices that can record and playback mom’s
heartbeat.
Natural
baby sleep aidsNatural baby sleep aids range from scented
candles to lotions to herbal tinctures.
A
lightly scented candle, as mentioned above, can be a very effective way
to lull baby into sleep. Lavender is a natural relaxer and its scent
has been proven to induce a state of serenity. Other essential oils
used in aromatherapy to calm and relax are chamomile and sandalwood.
You can “make your own” natural sleep candle by getting an organic
non-scented one and adding a few drops of essential oil each time you
light it.
An organic lotion
or
oil made for babies can be used to massage babies’ muscles to induce a
state of relaxation. We recommend this
one by Aubrey Organics.
It soothes skin with evening organic
primrose, almond and aloe vera oils.
After
6 months, this
natural remedy, formulated just for infants and children, can
be used to relax and calm your child and promote natural, peaceful
sleep. The makers of Serenite Jr., an all-natural, child-safe tincture
made with chamomile and passion flower, assure that it is gentle and
non-addictive. Click here for more information and to read several
